About The Haitian Project

The Haitian Project supports and oversees Louverture Cleary School, a Catholic secondary boarding school providing a rigorous, tuition-free education to academically-talented and motivated young men and women outside of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

The Haitian Project was founded in the early 1980s by St. Joseph's Parish in Providence, RI, to provide humanitarian aid and to the people of Haiti. Louverture Cleary School began as a response to one of the greatest needs of Haiti: education. Once a school with a handful of students and big dreams for the future, Louverture Cleary School has now grown to feed, house, and educate 360 bright and enthusiastic students from the poorest neighborhoods of Haiti.

Education First! It works.

The Haitian Project is a vocal advocate for education as the most effective and transformative tool for ending poverty in Haiti and around the world. We see this affirmed by history—in countries like India, Ireland and the U.S.—and in the work of some of the world’s most preeminent economists. Most importantly, we see it every day at Louverture Cleary School.

The transformative power of education is seen on our campus every day. The Haitian Project through its support of Louverture Cleary School not only provides a life-changing education to academically-gifted youth in Haiti who otherwise could not afford to attend school, we are also committed to the long-term success of Louverturians—our students—and of Haiti. Operating one of the largest university scholarship programs in the country, The Haitian Project supports 120 graduates with scholarships to Haitian universities each year.

An Louverture Cleary education prepares Louverturians for success. The Louverture Cleary culture prepares them to be leaders in rebuilding their country.

Students collectively conduct over 1,500 hours of structured community service each week within the campus and in the greater community through The Haitian Project’s various community outreach programs. This is by design, living out the school’s motto of Matthew 10:8, “What you receive for free, you must give for free.”

The Louverture Cleary Schools network: Poverty ends here.

In a country where fewer than 5 percent of people complete high school and less than 30 percent of college graduates stay in the country, 90 percent of Louverture Cleary alumni are in university or in professional careers IN HAITI, earning on average 10 times the per capita income of the country.
